The town (and also the pass) Obertauern is located about an hour's drive south of Salzburg. Thanks to its altitude (accommodation at an altitude of about 1700 m above sea level, peaks up to 2300 m above sea level) is one of the most reliable Austrian resorts in terms of snow, even if there is no glacier. The ski season usually starts in mid-November and ends in early May. There was enough snow even at Easter at the end of April and it was around zero degrees, so the snow did not flow, excellent skiing conditions.

In the town, it is a hotel in a hotel and the big advantage is that you do not have to travel anywhere by car, perhaps all hotels are right on the slopes or within a short walking distance. You can ride about 100 km of slopes of all difficulties, or you can take the Tauernrunde (circuit) in both directions. Apres-ski is also famous, you can have a drink or something to eat right before you reach your hotel. 

Interesting is that in the 60's shot here the film Help! famous Beatles. At that time, the small town attracted filmmakers thanks to the constant amount of snow cover and the possibility to close the area to fans. In front of the Edelweiss Hotel are the statues of this world-famous quartet.

Valamar Obertauern Hotel 4*

Location

The hotel is located in a quieter part of Obertauern, about a 3-minute walk from the Gamsleitenbahn I Talstation chairlift station, from where you can easily reach other lifts. The hotel has multi-storey underground garages (already included) and electric car owners can enjoy free recharging.

Accommodation

The hotel offers a wide selection of rooms from single, double, triple to family suites with mountain views. The rooms do not have balconies, but they have specially designed overhanging windows (niches) with glazing down to the bottom and in the triple superior room there was a rocking chair + a luxurious view of the opposite slopes, what more could you want. The superior triple room was spacious, with a sofa bed and table, a wide hallway with a large closet and a large bathroom with a bathtub. The bathroom had a hairdryer, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, soap, handkerchiefs, as well as body lotion and a large enough storage space for cosmetics. I missed the vanity kit. Toilet was separate. We were pleased with an electric kettle with a selection of teas and coffees, and a bottle of water was prepared for refreshments upon arrival. TV is a matter of course. Bathrobes and slippers were provided in the closet, plus a safe. No fridge. If you can choose, do not take the room directly above the entrance. When noisy drunken guests returned there at night, they woke us up quite a bit with the window open.

Wellness

Wellness lovers will enjoy the beautiful, newly renovated spa with several types of saunas. You can relax in the bio sauna, Finnish sauna, infrared sauna or steam sauna. There are several rooms with luxurious loungers for relaxation. For refreshments, there is a bar offering fresh fruit, nuts, tea and water. Children from the age of 16 accompanied by parents can also visit the spa from 3 pm to 6 pm, otherwise the relaxation area is designed especially for adults. In addition to saunas, massages, manicures, pedicures and beauty treatments are available at an additional cost. And if you feel that you haven't run out of energy skiing, you can visit the well-equipped fitness center, where there is both cardio and a fitness zone. New in 2022 - indoor swimming pool.

Food

We booked half board and in the ski season is added an afternoon snack in the lobby bar when you come hungry from skiing. You can treat yourself to a hot soup with pastries and you can choose from a variety of cheeses, salamis, olives, vegetables, breads spread with various homemade spreads, popcorn, tea, juice, water, coffee, croissants and strudel, which must not be missed in Austria, of course. Very nice from the hotel.

For breakfast you can indulge in whatever you want, you will find everything here: eggs in 100 ways, omelets on request, selection of cheeses, cold cuts, fruits, vegetables, pastries, muesli, yoghurts, white and whole grain pastries, pancakes, jams, teas, juices, water, filter coffee (I would prefer a coffee machine and a good espresso). At breakfast you chose the menu for dinner. There were always two soups and two main courses to choose from + a buffet bar with salads, cheeses, fruit, nuts, desserts and other delicacies, drinks paid for dinner. Special offer of meals for children. Restaurant Maremonti is a combination of Mediterranean (Valamar is a network of Croatian hotels), local Alpine and international cuisine. Breakfast is from 7.30-10.30, on Sundays until 11 am. Dinner from 6.30 pm to 9 pm. Interesting is the Fondue room - every Thursday and Saturday you can enjoy cheese or meat fondue with a wide range of side dishes and can be combined with wine tasting. There are no limits to creations. Fondue must be ordered in advance and surcharges, 15 Euro for cheese fondue per person, for meat and shrimp fondue 20 Euro (year 2022).

As for the entertainment in the hotel, there are various rocking chairs in the corridors, if you don't have them in your room, you can swing here, as well as various wicker hanging swings or even the whole rocking bed. If you don't mind sleeping in the hallway and you stay without a bathroom, you don't have to pay for a room :)))

For skiers

For skiers, there is a large ski storage room with ski dryers next to the entrance. Ski passes can also be purchased at the reception, but you must order them the day before and they can only be purchased one-day and multi-day. However, the cable car station is a short walk from the hotel and it is not a problem to buy a ski ticket there.

How to get to the hotel?

The easiest is, of course, by car, the Obertauern area is located about an hour south below Salzburg. You can also take a train to Radstadt, 20 km away, and then take a bus or taxi. If you are from a great distance, the nearest airport is 90 km in Salzburg. Alternatively, 140 km is Klagenfurt Airport.
